Latest News and Questions and Concerns about the Australian Coaching Guidelines

I forwarded the announcement this past week about the exciting new step in the Coaching Industry with the launching later this year of Coaching Guidelines.

Since that announcement, I've received lots of emails and phone calls asking "What's going on?", "Why were we not consulted?", "You can't do that!", "What does this mean?" and so on.  Most have been very pleasant conversations.  A few others were quite intense flavoured with some bitterness and fear.

Just to be clear, I am NOT part of the working group that has come up with the currently in draft guidelines.  I can't answer these questions and statements on behalf of others.  I don't have the information or the right to do so.

I do have a very open mind though that this could be a hugely exciting step in our evolution as a profession.

It's also important to understand that these are "guidelines" and that once launched will be evaluated and reviewed for a few years before the next step of making a standard suitable for regulation could even happen.

Our coaching world is NOT going to turn inside out overnight - the sky will not suddenly fall!

There are various individuals and groups who have some concerns about what these next steps are and could mean.  The questions being raised are great questions!  I have a few questions and concerns as well.

However, I'm looking forward to finding out about this along with everyone else at the various industry briefings that are being run later this year.

So please, start writing down your questions and come to those briefings prepared to engage in conversation.

Please DON'T get too caught up with negative thinking or fear about something you don't have enough information about.

I don't know these things either, but I'd rather be exciting about the prospects now than afraid of the risks.  I have lots of time to change this perspective later if the need arises.

Here's a wonderful article Mark Joyella from Coaching Commons put together on the Coaching Guidelines you might find very useful.
